So I still haven't gotten around to recycling of all of these empty DVD cases. Now I am trying to think of how to reuse them. Hmmmm... {wheels turning} .... and this is what I came up with....
... a coloring case! It's kind of an updated version of a crayon roll complete with paper storage. Now this is not just for kids! I would keep one in my purse so when inspiration strikes I can take it out and sketch and write down ideas!! Using color too!
Want to use your DVD cases too? Here's how to make one....
{gather your supplies}
empty DVD case {now, every DVD case is slightly different so you may need to make adjustments depending on the style of case you have}
thin cardboard {I used an old USPS mailing box}
card stock
fabric
colorful paper {for the outside artwork}
spray adhesive {this is going to be your best friend for this project!}
utility knife and self healing mat
{what you do}
This first part is a little tricky. You need to cut out the part of the case that holds the DVD {the round part that the DVD clicks into} so you have a flat surface so your writing tools will fit and the case will be able to close. To do that, place a self healing mat in between the outside plastic cover and the case so when you cut you will not cut the outside cover. Using a utility knife, carefully cut around the DVD holder. I found that using smaller, shallow cuts is the way to go and not cutting through the plastic all at once. Make sense so far?
Here is what mine looks like after being cut....
Now, cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside that space...
Cut a piece of fabric to wrap around the cardboard. Use spray adhesive to glue the fabric onto the cardboard.
Cut another piece of fabric for the pocket. I cut mine so the pocket would come up a little more than half as tall as the case. Once you measure, double the height so when you fold the fabric in half it will be the right size. Iron so you have a crisp fold.
Lay the pocket down and put some pencils on top. This will help create enough room for the pencils in the pocket.
Place the fabric covered cardboard on top of the pencils.
Fold over the sides of the pocket and use spray adhesive to glue down the pocket.
I used a little tape to help the corners stay down.
Glue the pocket into the case using spray adhesive. Glue over the hole you cut.
Cut some paper to fit in the case and place it under the tabs for the DVD info.
Cut a piece of decorative paper for the cover art. Decorate as you wish. Insert the cover. I don't have a picture but, I cut a piece of card stock and glued it to the outside of the case but inside of the plastic cover over the hole that I cut. This just makes the outer cover more smooth. I hope that makes sense :).
Enough room for about 14 pens or pencils.
The clips were perfect to hold a stack of paper.
These would be great for kids as a traveling coloring case, in the car, on a walk, in the classroom. A perfect, compact art studio and sketchbook for anyone!
If you have made one I would love to see! Come share on flickr!!

Aaah!!! BRILLIANT! Such a creative twist on the traditional crayon roll. Plus, with a hard surface on the box, coloring can happen anywhere! Pinning this now!
ReplyDeletei totally agree! i'm pinning this too.. and hopefully making two of them before we leave for our cross country move! (nice seeing you here too shelby!)
DeleteThanks for the inspiration! See my version here: http://thebeansproutnotes.blogspot.com/2012/07/childrens-travel-dvd-art-kit.html
DeleteWow! What a great idea. We're road tripping soon and this is perfect!
ReplyDeleteI love this so much!! I'm going to make some for my little guy and my nieces, they'll be absolutely perfect for long car trips and those times where we have to wait somewhere. Thanks for the inspiration!!
ReplyDeleteI love this! I have lots of dvd cases that are empty and in my way! I now have something I can do with them! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteMy girls would love this! So glad you linked up with us!

Wow - what a brilliant idea! Definately pinning this!
ReplyDeleteThat is really great! I have to do this very soon, it is very useful for a roadtrip or for my handbag.
ReplyDeleteI love this!! I am totally going to make this, thank you for sharing :)
ReplyDeleteCraftysoccermom.blogspot.com
Found this through Pinterest. Brilliant idea! Thank you for sharing!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is brilliant, found you via Pinterest and added you to my board too.
ReplyDeleteSuper fabulous idea! I can see using this for other things like holding crochet hooks. Thank you so much for sharing.
ReplyDeleteLOVE the crochet hook idea! I may have to make one myself! I don't have any organization for my hooks! Thanks for sharing the idea!
DeleteAwesome idea! Thanks for linking to Things I've Done Thursday!
ReplyDeleteI'm doing this tonight! These will be great for things to keep them occupied at church! Thanks so much for sharing!!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! I have a birthday party to go to tomorrow and had no clue what to bring. You saved me!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic and original idea. Love the material you used and it looks like a fun and easy project. Visiting from Katherine's Corner blog hop. Hope your weekend continues to be sensationally creative.
ReplyDeleteso i tried this and my dvd case won't close. I tried two different kinds of fabrics, two differnt kinds of pencils and then even tried wrapping it in paper. I haven't even put the stack of paper in on the other side yet. Any idea what I may be doing wrong?
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry you are running into problems! How about the cardboard you are using behind the pencils? It may be too thick. Also, I have noticed that I had many different styles of DVD cases (of course they had to be all different!) so yours may be slightly different in size. Try a thinner cardboard or a different DVD case. If you try again let me know how it works out! Good luck!
DeleteI had the same problem. The hook holding the paper on the left side pushes against the pocket holding the pencils on the right side. I made a velcro strap to put around the case and put a little flower on it for decoration.
DeleteI'm so sorry it didn't close! But great idea with the velcro!!
DeleteI ended up using card stock (the cover to one of my scrap book page sets) and it worked!! Thanks for bringing something super obvious to my attention lol! I did think about changing the fabric but never the cardboard :/ Thanks again!
DeleteI'm so glad it worked out for you!
Deletei had this problem, but i just had to trim the size of my cardboard to smaller than the space, so that it didn't push on the spine when it closed.
Deleteawesome!
ReplyDeleteStacy, my kids did this project together and loved it! I blogged about it and sent links back to your blog... hope that's okay. (Sorry about the super long link, this whole thing is new to me, and I can't figure out how to send you my blog link in a neater/easier way!)

Brenda,
DeleteJust visited your blog! They look great! And the two pockets for crayons is a great idea! Way to go!
I love both ideas, pencils and crayons!
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! I have been using felt to create no-sew pencil and crayon holders, I just love this idea! I can't wait to share it with my Facebook fans!
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I came across this today on Pinterest! I made one for my son this evening. I posted a blog about it and linked it back to you.

ReplyDeleteHow fabulous is this? LOVE this idea! I'm pinning it and can't wait to make a couple for my kiddies! Thanks for sharing and I am off to check out the rest of your blog.
ReplyDeleteJenn :)
This is fantastic! And lightweight! And just the thing for travelling with my coloured pencils!
ReplyDeleteI just thought that if you're sewing, you could sew the pocket to the fabric before glueing it onto the cardboard - that might be sturdier.
Also, I like Proverbs 22:6 Academy's idea - these could work for crochet hooks, socks knitting needles, many other things...
Hi,
ReplyDeleteI followed you over from Sundae Scoop. This is amazing and I can't wait to try this out. I would love to have you share this, and any other posts, on my link party at www.michellestastycreations.blogspot.com. Have a great weekend.

This is a great idea. I am going to pin it so I can come back and try it.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! You did a b beautiful job. Those would be great to have in the car for road trips.

ReplyDeletehttp://craft-connection.blogspot.com/2012/04/dvd-coloring-case-diy.html
I am thinking this would be great for kids in the car or in a restaurant, maybe even make a few of them for inexpensive but personalized birthday gifts!!!
Thanks for sharing! I already have plans for making some for gifts too! :)
DeleteThis is a brilliant idea. I will have to try it.
ReplyDeleteAlso looking at the other posts, the DVD cases that we buy at the $2 shop are called slimline and are about a third the width of commercial cases - just saying!!
Maybe transfer the commercial DVDs to the slimline ones and use the broken commercial width ones for this idea.
Wow! Great idea!
ReplyDeleteSuper creative! I have a big road trip coming up this summer, and I think I will have to make these for all the kiddos coming. Thanks for linking up to I Made It! Monday. Can't wait to see what you share this week.
ReplyDeleteStacy,
ReplyDeleteYour dvd repurpose is so clever and CUTE!
gail
you could also use one of those old vinyl VHS cases they are a tad larger. and they would work with your insert.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! It would be perfect for those large markers!
DeleteLove this! So making one of each for my kids when we travel in the summer!
ReplyDeletei think this is absolutely brilliant! i only wish i had it last week for our road trip! :P but i am still making these for each of my kids. :) we'd love for you to link this up to our Sunday Best party going on right now. http://griffithsrated.blogspot.com/2012/04/sunday-best-link-party.html

Thanks for the feature!!! :)
DeleteGenius! I am just now working on putting all our DVDs in binder sheets and now I can re-purpose all the jackets!-
ReplyDeleteThis is so, so clever! I'm not clever, so I sure appreciate people like you who think up this kind of stuff! Love it! I have tons of cases because I put our DVDs in binders, so I'm going to make some of these coloring cases. Yay!! :D
ReplyDeleteThis will be perfect for our cross-country car ride in a couple months! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fab idea. Thanks so much for sharing!!
ReplyDeletePure Genius!
ReplyDeleteOh what a good idea also you could make a case for crochet hooks thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeleteBRILLIANT!!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of some other uses, wondering if it would be deep enough for my travel watercolor set...or maybe using an old VHS box would work. Hmmmm....
ReplyDeletegenius! i got to make one for my son.
ReplyDeleteWhat a neat idea. I could use this to organize my crochet hooks! :-) Thanks!
ReplyDeletewait - doesnt it have a big hole in the back?
ReplyDeleteYes, you do cut a hole in it to take out the place where the dvd clicks in, but you put cardboard over it so you won't see the hole. :)
DeleteGod GOD this is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteCool! I'll definitly try it. I also came up with an idea to use my old DVD's for reading journals for my kids this sumemer.
ReplyDeletelove this so much. Brilliant recycling craft!! Thank you for linking up to the Thursday hop. Sorry I'm behind in saying thank you. My Monday post will explain my delay.Hope to see you again this Thursday. xo

Thank you Paula for the feature! :)
DeleteGreat idea, I'm all into chalkboardnpaint lately and will try to play around with this idea with the chalkboard paint. Thanks for the detailed post on how to make it.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea with the chalkboard paint! Would love for you to share!
DeleteI love this! I happen to be right in the middle of organizing my DVDs and getting rid of all the packaging. This is a perfect way to recycle. I may let some of the girls in our youth group at church do this as a service project, since I have so many cases!
ReplyDeleteWe have a nine hour car trip coming up this summer and a four hour plane ride, so I'm definitely making these to entertain my kids!! What a great idea! We don't keep DVD cases, but I do plan on buying some new movies for the trip, so now I have a use for the cases instead of throwing them out!
ReplyDeleteThis is genius! I am hoping I can find some old cases lying around so I can make one for each of my kids. Thank you for sharing this. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I'm going to try this for my Kids' Hope child to fill her end of year treat basket. thanks for the tute
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! I think I'll make these for my nephews the next time they come to visit.
ReplyDeleteI have so many empty DVD cases. My husband bought packages of blank ones years ago to use for his bands DVD they had made. We had a lot of extra cases. This is such a great idea for me to use those and some extra material. Make great gifts for all of my step-daughters friends when they have their various summer parties. I am glad I found your blog! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteCame over from Roadkill Rescue, and I absolutely love it this! How perfect for traveling! Might just feature this project this Friday.
ReplyDelete- Angela Marie @ http://sunkissedivory.blogspot.com
i've been trying to think of a good way to make a cover for my kobo e-reader, and my husband had some old video game boxes, just like dvd boxes but thicker. after seeing your idea it hit me to try that and it fit perfectly!!! now i don't have to buy some fifty dollar case :)i did mine a little differently preferring my power dremmel tool to saw out all the bits and a whole to charge while inside. :) i'll also be gluing a buckle :) thanks for your inspiration!!! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat find! I'm glad your e-reader was able to fit! Perfect!
DeleteOh....do you have any pictures?
DeleteWhen my students leave for a holiday during the school year, I send a journal for them to keep of their trip. This will allow an easy package for me to use, students can design the cover, or alternately use a postcard/brochure from their destination.
ReplyDeleteHi Stacy, thank you for this idea and here I am with my version :-D

Looks great! And cute fabric! I'm a little jealous of your clear case! Thanks for sharing!
DeleteI so love this idea which I found on Pintrest. I will be making a few of these soon. I have a nephew who is quite the artist and this would be perfect for him. One thought I had was to not only have blank paper to color on but add some puzzles, color pages, dot to dot etc. for children who are a little older. I will definately be using these for children at church as they learn to be reverent during services. Thanks much for the great idea. Beverly banuttercreation@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteThank you Beverly! Puzzles, coloring pages, dot to dots! Yes! Great idea!
Deletesaw this tonight and made one ten minutes later!!! lol. I used hot glue instead.. and it worked well also!! thanks!!
ReplyDeleteMy cardboard didn't fit as well as yours but I used an Xbox game case.
ReplyDeleteLOVEEE THIS!! Brilliant!
ReplyDeleteI just made this - I lovee it!
ReplyDeleteThis is genius. I'm an artist and I think i might put a spin on it and make myself a travel case for my sketch materials / art papers.
ReplyDeleteooh! or you could make a travel case for your makeup brushes, and tuck a mirror and a couple of eyeshadows in there. Or line it with satin and make pockets for keeping jewelry!
ReplyDeleteOh I like that idea
DeleteThis is the most awesome idea! I love it! And so amazing for us who can't sew. I am for sure going to start making these! Thank you so much!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't have spray adhesive, so I just machine sewed the fabric onto the cardboard and used double sided tape to secure to the case.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a GREAT idea! I pinned it for ya:
ReplyDeletehttp://pinterest.com/pin/157626055678238255/
These are amazing!!! My daughter and I are going to make them for all the children in our lives. I hate all those cases. I have a huge box of them in the the garage and now they are gonna be something fabulous :)
ReplyDeleteI just made the case for my 3yr. old daughter and it turned out so cute, thanks so much for the inspiration! Saw you on pinterest!
ReplyDeleteI just finishe a case for my almost-3-year-old. I used the same fabric for the cover under the plastic. It is cute and was so easy. He loves it. Thank you and thanks to Pinterest for leading me to you.
ReplyDeleteThis blog is so good that I’ve bookmarked and saved them with me. It’s a keeper!

ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic! I'm going to make one for myself and a couple for my nieces with crayons.
ReplyDeleteThis is adorable! We are driving to Virginia Beach in a few weeks- 6 hours in the car- our kids will love these :) Saw this on Pintrest- thank you!
ReplyDeleteHi Stacy,
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing us this how-to. I saw this on Pinterest and automatically thought "I can make this". I did and it was easy, I spent more time on the label with the rubber stamps for my son's then I did on the actually case. SUPER EASY PEASY LEMON SQUEEZY! :)
Thanks again,
April
great idea and the images are great! thanks for sharing, I am going to try this idea with a cd box...maybe it will work! wish me luck!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try this, but could you explain how you covered the hole.
ReplyDeleteWhat a lovely idea! I'm going to do at least two of them, one to me and other for my niblings :)
ReplyDeletea very great idea.

This is great. I made a bunch of math toolboxes for my algebra and geometry students out of VHS cases donated by a local video store. Unfortunately things did not fit right due to the two pieces that hold the VHS in place. You solved that for me! Also not all items made it back due to lack of a pocket. You solved that. Can't wait to update my toolboxes. I also plan on making a DVD one to store different colors of eyeliner in my makeup drawer. THANKS
ReplyDeleteI love this! Now I know what to do with the spare dvd cases I have around! :)
ReplyDeletegreat idea... thank you for sharing from italy
ReplyDeletetaced
This is so clever! Thanks very much for sharing the idea. I am going to do something similar (but much simpler, since it's just a 3 hour drive and not an all-day road-trip or anything) to keep my 3 kiddos (ages 7, 6 & 6) occupied on a weekend trip coming up, except I plan on using a half sheet of paper that is laminated (blank on one side, travel bingo card printed on the reverse) and a pair of thin dry erase or wet erase markers (if they fit in the case!) and a scrap of felt for erasing.
ReplyDeleteThis is really a very useful information on dvd coloring case.
ReplyDeleteSo excited to make this for my Niece's bday! Thanks for the Great idea :)
ReplyDeleteI love what you did. It's simply gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteI'm not that organized, so I hacked a version of this project - but totally inspired by you, Stacy!

I'm making these for a couple cousins for Christmas this year. I did learn that clear cases do NOT cut well. Mine splintered badly from where I was cutting.
ReplyDeleteim using your idea for a huuuggeee project at my church.. we have a ministry program called JOY.. its our special needs class.. and all of our 30+ kids we have in there looovveee to color.. so we are using this to personalize them all thier own color cases to give them for christmas. its our girls high school small group doing it!! if you have any more ideas and hints to make thiss more efficiant and maybe easier it would be a great help!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't have any fabric so I used some nice wrapping paper. Glue is not my friend so I had to use tape. Still turned out nice.
ReplyDeleteamazingly creative idea..definitely will give try to this
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know of a store that sells empty DVD cases? I wanted to make them for favors at my daughter's bday. I tried Walmart and Target. Heading to Best Buy and GameStop tomorrow...
ReplyDeletedownload is easy process and also free from virsus . This is very easy to download and also very nice block . Really its appreciated blog and information too.
ReplyDeleteThis is very nice, indeed!

ReplyDeleteThe post isgiving information about dvd colouring case. Useful post
ReplyDeleteI'm making this right now for my niece. I found when cutting out the DVD holder part that creating a small incision that the utility knife can fit in and sliding the knife around the edges of the circle is really simple. Just an idea for those like me who struggle with using a x-acto knife :)
ReplyDeletegreat great idea
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome Idea.......but while I was reading directions, I thought why not use a dremmel tool to grind down the raised area the cd sits in. Porbably easier to do, and you don't have to compromise the outer cover of the case.
ReplyDeleteJust a thought
Great Idea!
ReplyDeleteHello! Let me first highlight the fact that you actually managed to customize a very nice looking site. Will you be so nice and answer my question. Do you consider the option to write as a professional or owning a blog is a kind of hobby of yours?
ReplyDeleteYou can get DVD cases that are flat on both insides (no round DVD part to cut) from Stampin' Up. http://www.stampinup.com/ECWeb/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=119105
ReplyDeleteThese would save a few steps if you were making a bunch. I LOVE this idea!! Great to pull out for little ones during church as well :)
Just finished transferring the rest of my dvds into Atlantic inc. dvd sleeves. Takes up about 1/100 the space. That feels so good to say! Then I looked at the laundry basket of empty cases and despaired. What in the good gravy was I going to to with all of those. I figured someone had put their hat on before me so I Googlized and found the obvious ... duh ..... The Library! My thanks to the people who put their thinking caps on earlier than me. Off to the Library tomorrow! The deed is done!!!! Then I think I will just sit and look at mymiminalist collection for a minute or two.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. My daughter made one yesterday and it turned out just gorgeous. Here's a link if you'd like a peek...

ReplyDeleteI've started one already!...the cutting is a bear..and I now see I need better tools..but it's going to be great!
ReplyDeleteVery nice art..I like the CD box idea and very nice step by step procedure..thank you for this post I will try this soon.

ReplyDeleteHave a nice day!
this is SOO awesome! can't wait to try it! :) lisa
ReplyDeleteI am going to make one for each of my grandkids. But I am using a stampin up stamp case that I ordered a pack of 4 empty ones. So I won't have the back part cut out. Really excited to try this
ReplyDeleteWe finished this one on the weekend:
ReplyDeletehttp://alltagsdiamanten.wordpress.com/2013/04/22/dvd-case-coloring-case/
Great idea & instructions, thank you!
Very cute I will be trying this for my very creative eleven year old ....and thank you for such detailed instructions
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Any suggestions for old video cases? I have over 50 cases.
ReplyDeleteI agree that this is a fantastic idea, the only problem i have is that i don't understand how you can cut the 'circle' out of the case without cutting through the plastic on the outside of the case! Please help!
ReplyDeleteI slipped a thin piece of wood that I had laying around between the cover and the case to protect the cover, it worked well!! Good luck :)
DeleteTHAT IS AN AWESOME IDEA, SO GONA DO THIS :) THANX :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for this so simple idea! I found it on pinterest and within an hour I had one made! I shared mine here: http://christyscustoms.blogspot.com/2013/06/old-dvd-case-turned-traveling-coloring.html! Thanks again... I am hoping this will help get us through our 12 hour road trip {blah!}, lol!
ReplyDeleteSorry... here: http://christyscustoms.blogspot.com/2013/06/old-dvd-case-turned-traveling-coloring.html
Delete:)
What a great idea! I'm making a few of these right now!
ReplyDeleteHey, I mentioned you in my new post on my blog lovesharinglife.wordpress, com check it out!
ReplyDeleteI made one for each of my kids. I let them pick decorative paper instead of fabric to cover the cardboard piece on the inside. Instead of a pocket, I placed a rubber band all the way around the cardboard piece to keep the pens/pencils in place. I put a pic on my FB like page, Healthier with Holly Reed with a link back to your page for directions.
ReplyDeletehi Stacey, thanks for sharing your great idea…..i wrote a post on my italian blog with a tutorial to make this case,http://lecosedibibbi.blogspot.it/2013/12/portacolori-da-viaggio.html, there's a link to your page, hope it's ok for you …ciao bibbi
