This is a great idea!! .... I went to my friend's baby shower and the guests were asked to bring a letter so that the baby nursery will have a alphabet mural ... just like this one. Love that! I was really excited to do mine! I got the letter Z. I came up with two ideas, wrap a Z in zippers or make a scrabble letter. I chose to do the scrabble letter. Everyone whats to get that 10 points, right? And I had to make myself one too!
These would be great for the mural or room decoration or to spell out a word for wall art! Or maybe a jumbo scrabble game??
Here is how...
{What you need}
a square piece of wood {mine was 9.25x9.25}
sandpaper
masking tape
pencil
printout of a letter close to the scrabble font {sized to fit on your wood square}
paint
sawtooth hangers
{What you do}
First, sand down the square. I slightly rounded the edges and sanded the top to erase any imperfections.
Next, print out a letter to fit on your wood tile. Pick a font that most resembles the Scrabble font. Also, don't forget the number score. You can find that here. Sorry, I forgot what font I used :-/
On the back of your letters, use a pencil and color around the letter. Then center it on your wood and trace your letter. The lead will transfer onto the wood. Do the same with the numbers in the lower right hand corner. {My printout of the numbers did not have a simple straight one. When I transferred the image I removed the little fancy part on top so it would look like the Scrabble font.}
the pencil lines are hard to see in the picture |
Following your pencil guidelines, tape off your letter. I was lucky to only have letters with straight lines. If you choose a letter with curved lines you may want to try to make a stencil with contact paper like I did for this project.
Paint inside the tape and let dry.
Carefully pull off the tape when the paint is dry.
I love the evidence of a handmade project.....
For the zero I traced the number on a piece of tape then cut it out used that as a stencil.
Optional: I used a spray clear coating when the letters were all done.
To make a hanging letter use some sawtooth hangers on the back. I got these at Walmart for less than a dollar.
The Z goes to the baby and the L is displayed in our living room. I think a Scrabble letter will be a great addition to the ABC wall mural!
Along with the letter I found this adorable quilt panel at Hancock Fabrics and I just HAD to get it!

Pretty much fell in love with it because of these little guys...
Also, a fabric book...
I hope the recipient likes them as much as I do! :)
