Wow! Thank you everyone for all your wonderful comments on the DVD coloring case! And thank you for those who have featured it on their blog!! ...

I made another one and have a few updates to show you!

After looking through the 100 or so empty case I have, I found some different styles...

Some that were hard to cut around...

And some that were easy to cut...

Also, if you are having trouble with the case closing.....

find a DVD case with side claps! They are perfect for helping the case stay secure!

Another change I made was I created two side pockets for the pencils by sewing one stitch down the middle before gluing the fabric onto the cardboard. And only used one layer of fabric for the pocket. I just folded down the top and sewed to make a hem then sewed the middle pocket stitch. This also makes it more snug for the pencils.

I made a template for the cardboard insert that is behind the pencils...

Template also used to cut card stock to fit behind the cut out hole....

No more hole and you have a smooth surface. Now just insert a cover. I found wrapping paper works great!

Some of you came up with great suggestions like make one for crochet hooks and make two pockets for two rows of crayons.

And check out these blogs! They have each created their own DVD coloring case!

Crust, Crafts and Curriculum - used two pockets for two rows of crayons!

Landon's World - found coloring pages that were the perfect size!

I also set up a flickr group so you can share your handmade by stacy vaughn inspired projects. I would love to see what you're up to!!

I'm also brewing up some other ways to use DVD case so stay tuned for more!! Very excited to show you!

Thanks for stopping by!

  2. This is great for a tote bag for the car or as a party favor.

I have used cases for "forever" Christmas cards for my grown children, and insert a gift card or cash.

Thanks for the ideas! Keep 'em coming!

  6. I LOVE this idea. Thank you for the detailed explanation!

Would you tell me the difference between the easy and hard to cut cases? It's probably obvious, but I couldn't figure it out from the photos.

    Thank you!

  8. Thank you thank you! I have a full diaper box full of DVD cases and I kept telling hubby not to throw them out as he moved them around the storage room. Now I can make all my Brownies one for our Winter camping trip in the new year.

  9. Just wanted to say i think this craft was fabulous and that I did try it but did it just slightly differently. I have a two year old little girl so I followed your tutorial except that i bought a dry erase magnet board like for a locker and cut it down to size instead of using papr and then added dry erase crayons that way if she decides to color a shopping cart car seat etc it just wipes right off. Thank you again!

  10. Hi, I came across this on Pinterest and think it's brilliant. I have another idea for you; my daughter has a 6 dvd set of Thomas, it is a much wider case and the best part is the dvds are attached with small posts in the spine and the whole dvd set just pops right out, no need for any cutting of the dvd case. I think I'll check my thrift stores for dvds that are sets and hopefully I can pick up some that are cheap. Thanks again.

  15. I just finished my first of three for my nephews and daughter as their christmas gifts! They are so cute!!! I made mine with a robot theme and I am just in love with them! I can't wait for Christmas! : )

Although the cutting of the case was hard, after awhile I get much better at it. It was a combination of slicing, stabbing, and sawing! Haha!

  17. I may use this as a grocery list and coupon holder.
The pocket could hold those coupons you plan on using for your current trip to the store.
