Anybody hate cardboard boxes that board games, puzzles and cards come in? I DO! They get so worn out and then you have a beat up box that hardly holds the game pieces/cards. Drives me a little crazy. Sure, you could just use a rubber band and wrap it around a deck of cards…… but, that’s just not me :-D.
Once I figured out the right dimensions these little guys came together quickly! Want to make one? Here’s how…
Outer fabric – 2 pieces – 4 ¼ x 5 in
Liner fabric - 2 pieces – 4 ¼ x 5 in
Interfacing
Small hair tie
Button
{What you do}
Cut your fabric and iron on interfacing.
You will sew the outer fabric together and the liner fabric together the same way. With right sides together use a ¼ in seam allowance and sew around 3 sides … 5in side, 4 ¼ in side, 5in side.

Sew corners:
Open seams, match inside seams at corner, pin. {see picture}
Measure about 7/16 – ½ in from corner and draw a line {see picture}.

Sew along line.
Insert lining into outer fabric.
Repeat on the remaining 3 corners.
Open and press seams.
Turn outer fabric right side out. Keep inner fabric wrong side out.
Fold down top {raw edge side} about ½ in. You may need to adjust depending on how far you want your cards to stick out.
Press.
I folded over the raw edge and then inserted the deck of cards. I didn't want the cards to stick out so I refolded the fabric {seen in next picture}. |
Fold hair tie in half and place in the middle of one side. Pin on both sides to keep in place. I did not pin the whole thing.
Start sewing a top stitch starting at the hair tie. Sew with the lining side up. I found it is easier that way to manipulate the fabric to get a nice straight stitch. Sew all the way around, past the hair tie. Finish off.
Add a button.
Done!
Now you have a pretty and practical way to hold your cards. No more beat up boxes!
Make some for all your decks of cards. Great for kid card games! Old Maid, Go Fish, Crazy 8s, matching games, even Pokemon, Magic, Ninjago {or whatever the kids are into these days}, even flash cards!
Start sewing!

Your so smart :)
ReplyDeleteLove this. Our card boxes always tear and I end up rubber banding them. I might have to make some of these. Nice Stacy!
ReplyDeleteMuch better than a rubber band that gets old and snaps and stings you when it breaks.

ReplyDeleteAwesome idea! Did you use quilting cotton fabric or heavier fabric?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I love this, am definitely going to make some
ReplyDeleteThank you! I love this pattern!
ReplyDeleteCould you maybe add a photo of the cards on the pattern piece so we could gauge the size difference if working with non-standard cards?
ReplyDeleteI made this and love it! No more rubber bands, and i made another one with thicker fabric for the outer with no interfacing. Worked great too! Thank you for this pattern! Now i just have to find/figure out a pattern for our old skip O cards!
ReplyDeleteLove this for my tarot cards!
