tic-tac-toe game

I must be on some sort of game kick. Travel checkers board, now tic-tac-toe, and also deck o' cards holder. And I still have ideas for more game related projects. :)

Here is a simple way you can use a drawstring bag to make a tic-tac-toe game. And when you are done just pop the pieces inside the bag for storage!

{gather your supplies}

you'll also need...
Fray Check, sewing machine and basic sewing tools

{what you do}

See the drawsting bag tutorial for instructions on how to make the bag. But just cut your pieces, do not sew together yet! Make your bag any size you want.

Grab a piece of your outer fabric. Cut and lay out 4 pieces of ric rac to create a tic-tac-toe board.

Use Fray Check on the ends of your pieces of ric rac so they won't fray.

Pin and stitch each piece of ric rac down. I used a coordinating thread (yellow).

Pull the threads to the back side and clip.

The front of the bag is finished.

Continue making the drawstirng bag.

Add a rope.

Use stones for game pieces. {or other objects you have, coins, milk jug caps, bottle caps....}

All the pieces fit inside the bag and is ready for travel, the beach, park, backyard, classrooms, or play rooms!

Enjoy! :)

travel checkers board

Well, I have another DVD case project for you! I love this one! When I was young my family would take a lot of road trips. And, back then, iPads, iPods, Nintendo DXs, and whatever small electronic device the kids use these days were just not available. :) So, my brother and I would bring along books and travel games. I still love those travel games. Anything small and compact that was fun! And after the huge response from the DVD coloring case, and my HUGE pile of empty DVD case still at my house, I had to think of some other uses! So I have a travel checkers game in a DVD case!!

Here we go!

{what you need}
empty DVD case
2 pieces of cardboard, 5x7.25 inches
fabric
3/4 inch wide Velcro in 2 colors
24 buttons, 12 in one color, 12 in another {plus a few more for kings}
card stock cut to 5x7.25 inches

{tools}
utility knife
spray adhesive
glue gun and glue

{what you do}

First, cut around the DVD holder of the case. Insert a self healing mat in between the clear plastic and the case, then cut. See more details here.

Cut out cardboard and wrap both pieces in fabric of our choice. Spray adhesive works great for this. Glue both pieces inside the DVD case. I used hot glue for this part.

Cut 32 square pieces of each color of velcro, the fuzzy side.

Starting at the inside edge, start creating one half of a checker board pattern with the velcro pieces gluing them down with hot glue. An 4 x 8 square will be on each half so when put together it will be 8 x 8 square. Do the same for the other side.

Place a strip of velcro alongside the grid on each side to store pieces.

Cut circles out of the hook side of velcro and hot glue them to the back of the buttons to create the game pieces.

Make a couple extra for the kings. Make them a little different so you can tell them apart, like making dots using nail polish.

Place the piece of card stock over the hole you cut and add a fun cover.

I used a case with the little tabs on the side to help keep the case closed. It is nice because the buttons and velcro make it a little thick.

I love this because it is compact and can pop in your travel bag, the Velcro board and pieces make the game bumpy road and turbulence proof, and can keep kids {or adults} happy on the road, plane, waiting room!!!

If you make one put a photo on the flickr group. I would love to see!

I made another one and have a few updates to show you!

After looking through the 100 or so empty case I have, I found some different styles...

Some that were hard to cut around...

And some that were easy to cut...

Also, if you are having trouble with the case closing.....

find a DVD case with side claps! They are perfect for helping the case stay secure!

Another change I made was I created two side pockets for the pencils by sewing one stitch down the middle before gluing the fabric onto the cardboard. And only used one layer of fabric for the pocket. I just folded down the top and sewed to make a hem then sewed the middle pocket stitch.This also makes it more snug for the pencils.

I made a template for the cardboard insert that is behind the pencils...

Template also used to cut card stock to fit behind the cut out hole....

No more hole and you have a smooth surface. Now just insert a cover. I found wrapping paper works great!

Some of you came up with great suggestions like make one for crochet hooks and make two pockets for two rows of crayons.

And check out these blogs! They have each created their own DVD coloring case!

Crust, Crafts and Curriculum - used two pockets for two rows of crayons!

Landon's World - found coloring pages that were the perfect size!

I also set up a flickr group so you can share your handmade by stacy vaughn inspired projects. I would love to see what you're up to!!

I'm also brewing up some other ways to use DVD case so stay tuned for more!! Very excited to show you!

Thanks for stopping by!
