dvd coloring case

So I still haven't gotten around to recycling of all of these empty DVD cases. Now I am trying to think of how to reuse them. Hmmmm... {wheels turning} .... and this is what I came up with....

... a coloring case! It's kind of an updated version of a crayon roll complete with paper storage. Now this is not just for kids! I would keep one in my purse so when inspiration strikes I can take it out and sketch and write down ideas!! Using color too!

Want to use your DVD cases too? Here's how to make one....

{gather your supplies}

empty DVD case {now, every DVD case is slightly different so you may need to make adjustments depending on the style of case you have}

thin cardboard {I used an old USPS mailing box}

card stock

fabric

colorful paper {for the outside artwork}

spray adhesive {this is going to be your best friend for this project!}

utility knife and self healing mat

{what you do}

This first part is a little tricky. You need to cut out the part of the case that holds the DVD {the round part that the DVD clicks into} so you have a flat surface so your writing tools will fit and the case will be able to close. To do that, place a self healing mat in between the outside plastic cover and the case so when you cut you will not cut the outside cover. Using a utility knife, carefully cut around the DVD holder. I found that using smaller, shallow cuts is the way to go and not cutting through the plastic all at once. Make sense so far?

Here is what mine looks like after being cut....

Now, cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside that space...

Cut a piece of fabric to wrap around the cardboard. Use spray adhesive to glue the fabric onto the cardboard.

Cut another piece of fabric for the pocket. I cut mine so the pocket would come up a little more than half as tall as the case. Once you measure, double the height so when you fold the fabric in half it will be the right size. Iron so you have a crisp fold.

Lay the pocket down and put some pencils on top. This will help create enough room for the pencils in the pocket.

Place the fabric covered cardboard on top of the pencils.

Fold over the sides of the pocket and use spray adhesive to glue down the pocket.

I used a little tape to help the corners stay down.

Glue the pocket into the case using spray adhesive. Glue over the hole you cut.

Cut some paper to fit in the case and place it under the tabs for the DVD info.

Cut a piece of decorative paper for the cover art. Decorate as you wish. Insert the cover. I don't have a picture but, I cut a piece of card stock and glued it to the outside of the case but inside of the plastic cover over the hole that I cut. This just makes the outer cover more smooth. I hope that makes sense :).

Enough room for about 14 pens or pencils.

The clips were perfect to hold a stack of paper.

These would be great for kids as a traveling coloring case, in the car, on a walk, in the classroom. A perfect, compact art studio and sketchbook for anyone!

If you have made one I would love to see! Come share on flickr!!

  16. so i tried this and my dvd case won't close. I tried two different kinds of fabrics, two differnt kinds of pencils and then even tried wrapping it in paper. I haven't even put the stack of paper in on the other side yet. Any idea what I may be doing wrong?

    1. I'm sorry you are running into problems! How about the cardboard you are using behind the pencils? It may be too thick. Also, I have noticed that I had many different styles of DVD cases (of course they had to be all different!) so yours may be slightly different in size. Try a thinner cardboard or a different DVD case. If you try again let me know how it works out! Good luck!

      Delete
    2. I had the same problem. The hook holding the paper on the left side pushes against the pocket holding the pencils on the right side. I made a velcro strap to put around the case and put a little flower on it for decoration.

      Delete
    3. I'm so sorry it didn't close! But great idea with the velcro!!

    4. I ended up using card stock (the cover to one of my scrap book page sets) and it worked!! Thanks for bringing something super obvious to my attention lol! I did think about changing the fabric but never the cardboard :/ Thanks again!

      Delete
    5. I'm so glad it worked out for you!

    6. i had this problem, but i just had to trim the size of my cardboard to smaller than the space, so that it didn't push on the spine when it closed.

  26. This is fantastic! And lightweight! And just the thing for travelling with my coloured pencils!
    I just thought that if you're sewing, you could sew the pocket to the fabric before glueing it onto the cardboard - that might be sturdier.
    Also, I like Proverbs 22:6 Academy's idea - these could work for crochet hooks, socks knitting needles, many other things...

    Also looking at the other posts, the DVD cases that we buy at the $2 shop are called slimline and are about a third the width of commercial cases - just saying!!
    Maybe transfer the commercial DVDs to the slimline ones and use the broken commercial width ones for this idea.

I am going to do something similar (but much simpler, since it's just a 3 hour drive and not an all-day road-trip or anything) to keep my 3 kiddos (ages 7, 6 & 6) occupied on a weekend trip coming up, except I plan on using a half sheet of paper that is laminated (blank on one side, travel bingo card printed on the reverse) and a pair of thin dry erase or wet erase markers (if they fit in the case!) and a scrap of felt for erasing.

  109. I'm making this right now for my niece. I found when cutting out the DVD holder part that creating a small incision that the utility knife can fit in and sliding the knife around the edges of the circle is really simple. Just an idea for those like me who struggle with using a x-acto knife :)

  110. This is an awesome Idea.......but while I was reading directions, I thought why not use a dremmel tool to grind down the raised area the cd sits in. Porbably easier to do, and you don't have to compromise the outer cover of the case.

    Just a thought

  111. Hello! Let me first highlight the fact that you actually managed to customize a very nice looking site. Will you be so nice and answer my question. Do you consider the option to write as a professional or owning a blog is a kind of hobby of yours?

  112. You can get DVD cases that are flat on both insides (no round DVD part to cut) from Stampin' Up. http://www.stampinup.com/ECWeb/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=119105

    These would save a few steps if you were making a bunch. I LOVE this idea!! Great to pull out for little ones during church as well :)

  113. Just finished transferring the rest of my dvds into Atlantic inc. dvd sleeves. Takes up about 1/100 the space. That feels so good to say! Then I looked at the laundry basket of empty cases and despaired. What in the good gravy was I going to to with all of those. I figured someone had put their hat on before me so I Googlized and found the obvious ... duh ..... The Library! My thanks to the people who put their thinking caps on earlier than me. Off to the Library tomorrow! The deed is done!!!! Then I think I will just sit and look at mymiminalist collection for a minute or two.

  126. I agree that this is a fantastic idea, the only problem i have is that i don't understand how you can cut the 'circle' out of the case without cutting through the plastic on the outside of the case! Please help!

    1. I slipped a thin piece of wood that I had laying around between the cover and the case to protect the cover, it worked well!! Good luck :)

  131. I made one for each of my kids. I let them pick decorative paper instead of fabric to cover the cardboard piece on the inside. Instead of a pocket, I placed a rubber band all the way around the cardboard piece to keep the pens/pencils in place. I put a pic on my FB like page, Healthier with Holly Reed with a link back to your page for directions.

  136. At first I used to store them in paper sleeves but they caused surface scratches. Then I found these CD cases by Neo Online and I’m in love with them now because they keep my discs safe and organized.
